EAS SYMPOSIUM 2: Stellar Evolution AND ASTEROSEISMOLOGY

23-24 August 2007

Contact: Georges Alecian (France)

The symposium is open for wide discussions on stellar structure, evolution, and related aspects. Stellar physics is faced with a large amount of high quality observational data (multi-wavelengths, multi-objects, high resolution spectroscopy, etc.), an important challenge for theoretical/numerical modeling. The meeting will partially focus on asteroseismology, a recent emerging field in astrophysics. The oscillations of solar-type stars represent an exciting new field with many developments, also connected to the exoplanets field through the asteroseismology of exoplanet host stars. The COROT satellite (dedicated to asteroseismology and detection of exoplanet transits), which was launched on the end of 2006, is a good example of the recent evolution of this research field, since first observational results are expected by the end of this year, and many subjects of stellar physics will be tackled by this mission. Stellar modeling is also closely dependent on good diagnostic tools and on the ability to correctly interpret observations of the most visible part of stars: their atmosphere. For this reason, the meeting will also consider observations and modeling of stellar atmospheres, as tools for understanding the entire star.

SOC

Georges Alecian (France, Chair), Torsten Boehm (France), Areg Mickaelian (Armenia), Arlette Noels (Belgium), Sylvie Vauclair (France).

Topics (preliminary):

- inner structure of the stars and their evolution
- close binaries and variability
- early stages of evolution and instability
- oscillations in Solar-type stars
- stellar oscillations and exoplanets
- final stages of evolution: WD, NS, and BH
- models of atmospheres and diagnostic tools
