EAS SYMPOSIUM 8: SCIENCE WITH VIRTUAL OBSERVATORIES
23-24 August 2007
Contact: Areg Mickaelian (Armenia)
The Astrophysical Virtual Observatories (AVOs) have been created in a number of countries using their available databases and current observing material as a collection of interoperating data archives and software tools to form a research environment in which complex research programs can be conducted. The International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA) joins these efforts and coordinates the unified development of the corresponding standards and applications. The final goal of the VOs is efficient use of the multiwavelength observational data coming from various sky areas and epochs to achieve new results impossible before without such a combination. A number of science projects have already been started and tested, such as cross-correlation of large catalogs and finding objects with definite properties, optical identifications of gamma, X-ray, IR, and radio sources, construction and study of multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) combining various data, modeling of evolution processes based on combination of data from different epochs, etc.
The EAS Symp. 8 "Science with Virtual Observatories" will be rather timely to report and discuss the achievements in this area and plan further developments and future projects. In addition, a combination of efforts from different studies started already may also support conduction of new projects.
The famous Markarian survey (or the First Byurakan Survey, FBS) was digitized recently, and a large low-dispersion spectroscopic database of the Digitized FBS (DFBS) was created. This is a new type of data, as images and spectra are combined together. The Armenian VO team is especially interested to discuss with the VO community the further development of the DFBS with the VO standards and conduction of new science projects based on joint use of the DFBS and other available astronomical databases.
