Flare Stars

International Symposium devoted to the official opening of the 2.6m telescope
October 5-8, 1976, Byurakan, Armenia

An international symposium, devoted to non-stable, mainly flare stars was organized on the occasion of the official opening of new 2.6 m telescope in the Byurakan Observatory. On October 4 the opening ceremony of the telescope was held in the telescope building, and on October 5-8, the scientific sessions passed in the Conference Hall of the Observatory.

The symposium had three goals:

• discussion of observed regularities of distribution of flare stars with respect to different physical types, in stellar aggregates and in the common stellar field of the Galaxy
• discussion of principles of catalogization of flare stars and flares, comparison of the lists compiled at different observatories
• co-ordination of the further work between different observatories

33 Soviet and 15 foreign scientists (astronomers from 10 countries: USA, Argentina, France, Sweden, Finland, GDR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria) took part in the symposium, including Ch.H. Papas and D.S. Evans (USA), W. Iwanowska (Poland), G.W. Gahm (Sweden), L. Divan (France), B. Seidl and I. Jankovich (Hungary), Ya. Tuominen (Finland). 28 talks were given, including by 8 Byurakan scientists.

The symposium gave a possibility to discuss important observational and theoretical problems, connected with the study of flare stars and other non-stable objects, showing evidence of similar properties, as well as sum up investigations, carried out in this field.
